We’re going to have some fun with yellow! Yellow can be surprisingly tricky to paint convincingly. We’ll explore how to work with colour theory to create yellows that have depth, luminosity and impact, rather than simply reaching for the brightest yellow in the palette. Our inspiration will include beautiful cut flowers and potted specimens for each participant, including: Daffodils & Tulips & Euphorbia species, including E. × martinii ‘Tiny Tim’, E. wulfenii and E. rigida

As always, this class is designed to accommodate beginners, ongoing beginners, intermediate and advanced artists. You can work at your own level, with plenty of one-on-one feedback and guidance as we progress through the sessions.

his term we’ll be inspired by the beautiful spring bulbs that are bursting into flower.

We’ll continue our exploration of yellow and colour theory, looking at how to create convincing and impactful botanical paintings using colour relationships, rather than relying on colour straight from the tube or pencil.

Our inspiration will include: Daffodils & Tulips

As with all my classes, beginners, ongoing beginners, intermediate and advanced artists are very welcome. Everyone works at their own pace and level, with individual feedback and guidance throughout the four sessions. Plus, there’s the added bonus of working from my Sassafras studio in its lovely garden setting, surrounded by the greenery and wildlife of the Yarra Ranges. It really is a beautiful place to spend a Sunday painting.

OPEN STUDIOS

Ever wondered what happens in a botanical artist’s studio?

Or perhaps you’re curious about botanical art but aren’t quite ready to commit to a class?

I’m opening the studio doors for two FREE Open Studio sessions in September, and I’d love you to come along.

These relaxed, informal days are an opportunity to bring your questions, your work, your curiosity — or simply yourself!

SOUTH YARRA

Friday 11 September | 10am–4pm Botanical Art School of Melbourne (BASM), South Yarra

SASSAFRAS

Sunday 13 September | 10am–4pm Sassafras Studio

And don’t feel you need to stay for the whole day — drop in for an hour or two, stay for the morning, or settle in for the day. Come whenever suits you!

The Open Studio sessions are perfect for:

Materials discussions – wondering which paper, paints, pencils or other materials might work best for you?

Curious artists-in-waiting – interested in botanical art but not sure where to begin? Come and have a chat and see what it’s all about.

Troubleshooting – stuck on a painting or drawing? Bring it along and let’s see if we can work out what’s not quite working.

Fun group painting or drawing – bring your current project, grab a cuppa and spend some relaxed time making art alongside other botanical art enthusiasts.

There’s no formal teaching program – just an opportunity to drop in, ask questions, share ideas and make some art in good company.

The Art of Botanical Illustration — TABI 🌿🎨

19 September – 4 October : Domain House, South Yarra

I’m absolutely thrilled to have three paintings selected for this year’s The Art of Botanical Illustration (TABI) exhibition!

TABI is being held at Domain House in South Yarra, just across from the National Herbarium of Victoria, making it a particularly lovely location for an exhibition celebrating botanical art.

Having had the privilege of convening TABI in 2024, I know just how much work goes on behind the scenes to bring an exhibition of this calibre together. The result is something very special – an amazing collection showcasing some of the highest calibre botanical art presented in Australia.
